Sunrise at the Castlewellan Maze
Twenty Five years ago and the Good Friday Agreement was signed . To celebrate the event, staff at Castlewellan Forest park thought of a competition to provide the biggest maze in Europe , to be planted in Castlewellan Forest Park. Nearly 4,000 children sent in entries and a young lad from Larne won the event. Now to get the maze planted. Word went out and members from Newcastle Lions Club arrived one Saturday to help plant the yew bushes that form the maze. This was a signal for one of the wettest days, just to help the yew bushes settle in. The maze today is spectacular. On Wednesday, Lion president Beth Cairnduff and Newcastle Lion Club members joined with Agricultural students from Dublin and Antrim to help tidy up and remove rubbish from the maze. The event was launched by N M & D DC chairman Phillip Campbell. When the yew is trimmed the cuttings were used for medical purposes , The sun shone during the clean up and everyone was treated to lunch in the Arboretum Green House. The green house has only recently been reopened after extensive repairs and repainting.
